Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Thursday morning after Donald Trump threw tantrums and made more of his trademark impotent threats when he didn’t get his way. Let’s dive in.
Kennedy Threat: We have been covering developments in the fight over the Kennedy Center, which is escalating every day. After closing the Center over a sham emergency, Trump has ratcheted up his threat to demolish the Kennedy Center, as he did when a reporter confronted him about his obsession to have his name added to the building.
Reporter: Mr. President, why is it so important for you to have your name on the Kennedy Center?
President Trump:
Well, it’s a very easy question to answer because it’s a mess……So for the Trump administration, for me to get involved and to take that on long term and to carry it or to raise money to carry it, I think that the Trump administration should certainly have recognition.
Because frankly, if we don’t do that, it’s going to close. It’ll end up being ripped down
‘DEMOLISH’: And video influencer Aaron Rupar flagged a pool photo of Trump through a Marine One window inspecting a placard on which the words “Kennedy Center” and “Demolish” are prominently featured.
While this fight is far from over, it underscores the twisted priorities of a president who is mired in crisis and dangerously unfit.
Rate Mail: Hand-picked Trump Fed Chair Kevin Warsh touched off another tantrum when he announced an interest rate hike, and explained the reason for the move to reporters.
Yet for more than five years, inflation has been running above target, so our predominant focus is on the price stability side of our mandate.
The plain fact is that inflation is too high and has been for too long.
Trump responded with an incoherent and illiterate rant on Truth Social, which he expanded on when he spoke to reporters in North Carolina.
And before you start crediting Warsh with too much independence, Trump took a hammer to that idea by bragging that he spoke to Warsh ahead of the hike, and forgave him because he “didn’t have the votes.”
I talked to Kevin, and I said, you might as well vote with the board ’cause it’s not gonna matter.
The Plot Thinnens: Trump was also pressed about his insane claim that his assassination attempt was “all a Democrat plot,” and responded with verbal diarrhea — and, of course, no evidence.
Reporter: Mr. President — Butler, in Butler, Pennsylvania. Can you provide us with more information of the evidence that you’ve heard?
President Trump: No, Butler thing is strange. Very strange situation. It was handled by the Biden administration and a very bad, very bad head of the FBI at the time, as you know. Christopher Wray was a terrible — he’s a dirty cop, in my opinion. But you have to check with the law enforcement.
I think the whole Butler thing was very badly handled.
EU Have Got To Be Kidding: In other Trump tantrum news, he blurted out another threat to reporters when he was asked about Canada joining the EU as an associate member.
I think it’s laughable. The whole thing with Canada. Canada’s been a terrible trade partner and no, I don’t see that. If they do that, if I think it’s at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things.
Trader Schmoe: And speaking of trade, Trump put on a spectacular display of ignorance when he told reporters he could make $50 billion by halting trade, then escalated that an hour later to, get this, $1.5 trillion dollars when he made his speech.
Trump (tarmac): For instance, if we lose fifty billion dollars a year with a country, and we say we’re not gonna trade with you anymore, we don’t lose fifty billion dollars a year.
Trump (rally): And if we stop trading with every country that we have a deficit with, which is most of them, which would be very easy to do, would make at least one point five trillion dollars a year.
