Senator Jon Ossoff tore into Donald Trump in a blistering speech on Sunday that is the blueprint for how every Democrat should campaign against the Republicans.
Ossoff already exerted a yuge amount of influence over the approaching midterms when he triggered an epic Trumpworld meltdown with three simple words: “Travel with Natalie.”
He is currently up by more than seven points in the RCP average against Trump-endorsed opponent Mike Collins, in a state that Trump won by 2.2 points in 2024. Like every seat this cycle, Ossoff’s is a must-hold for the Democrats — and he’s holding it down.
But Ossoff is also setting the pace and the example foe every Democrat in a tough race with hard-hitting speeches like the one he gave this weekend.
While Trump was bumbling and gaffeing his way through Ireland, Ossoff was taking the fight to Trump and Collins at a rally in Athens, Georgia that hit all the right notes.
Sen. Ossoff cut right to it by rattling off a powerful riff on Trump’s failures and abuses that would fit in an Instagram short.
Now I know many of you are here today because you just can’t stand what’s been done to our country.
Our whole government made a corrupt tool of one man’s vengeance and power and wealth.
The president’s critics are prosecuted or bullied off the airwaves.
Prices soar while the president rakes in billions.
Cancer patients lose insurance while the rich get another tax cut.
We sink in the quicksand of reckless war as immigrant families are torn apart.
And private prisons grow in size and in squalor.
The Justice Department and even our intelligence services are twisted to serve the president’s vendettas.
But in one month, Athens, we will vote to rebuke him so decisively. No president will dare such abuses again for centuries!
In one month, we’ll vote to defeat the bigot congressman, Trump puppet Mike Collins!
A few minutes later, Ossoff dropped the hammer with a chunk that began with a reminder of Trump’s most fundamental broken promise and finished on his most explosive one while tying them to the Trump-a-palooza convention.
Now remember, Trump promised to lower prices on day one.
But last week, the broken old man threw a two-day party in Texas while it cost more than ever to fill up your truck, to stock your fridge, and to power your home.
And under the failed President Donald J. Trump, food, diesel and healthcare all just hit their all-time highs.
They doubled your insurance premiums and slashed Medicaid to cut taxes for their corporate donors and the ultra-rich.
They made you pay more for everything.
They lied us into war and spent most of the last year covering up for the world’s famous pedophile.
All while the crook president and his crook family raked in billions from all over the world. He promised to lower prices on day one, and he also promised peace.
Instead the draft-dodging commander-in-chief builds a monument to himself while plunging us deeper into a war he doesn’t know how to end or how to win.
And with laser-like precision, Ossoff cut through the mountain of Trump gaffes and outrages to highlight a powerful moment that was barely a blip for the political media.
And once again, it’s a war based on lies. Remember, last year they claimed Iran’s nuclear program had been obliterated. Do you remember that? No.
And then this year, they claimed that same nuclear program posed an imminent threat, both times lies. On day four of the war, day four, the president declared victory. On day 11, Trump said, quote, the war is very complete. Day 13, quote we won. Day 21, getting very close. Day 32, leaving very soon. On day 40, the president declared, quote, “total and complete victory.”.
And this Wednesday will be day 200. 18 Americans are dead and hundreds wounded.
The president calls this “small potatoes.”
Ossoff spent the middle of the speech dismantling Mike Collins methodically and completely, and in the same way he did Trump — a minute at a time and in devastating fashion.
If Democrats are going to succeed in the midterms, and beyond, they need to emulate effective messengers like Ossoff, not bad advice from focus groups and pollsters.
