Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on another Monday morning after Trump jetted off to Ireland for a golf weekend with all of his madness and incompetence — and Natalie Harp — in tow. Let’s jump in.
Commander-In-ZZZ: When we last left Trump, he was nodding off during a 9/11 25th anniversary memorial at the Pentagon on Friday.
That performance would have been met with disastrous coverage if it had been Joe Biden. But for Trump, it was crickets.
Cognitive Ass: After that it was off to Ireland, but not before he gave reporters this cognitive misadventure of a word salad about his Trump-a-pa-LOSER convention.
I think Dallas was a tremendous success. The — I would call it the convention. They should call it midterm, but whether it was midterm or not, it was certainly midterm, but it was a tremendous success. It was packed.
Narrator: It was not packed.
Hump Day: Trump was met with the same sort of adulation that has greeted him on all of his appearances on the world stage — like this brutal mockery by protesters.
Making It Weird: An Irish reporter asked Trump about those protesters, and the addled creeper-in-chief delivered the ick.
Q: Did you see any footage of the protest against your visit in Dublin and what do you make of it?
TRUMP: I don't know. You know, You remind me of somebody. A very cute Irish singer who passed away recently. You know who that is? Sinead! You look like Sinead O'Connor. That's a compliment.
In a 2020 interview, O’Connor said, of Trump, “I actually do believe Donald Trump is the biblical Devil, the fucker.”
Nobody should think he’s doing this just so he can get elected. He is devilish enough that he believes in this stuff. They should have dragged him out of the White House at the point he separated the first child from their parents at the Mexican border. American people; it’s a double-edged sword. Their greatest blessing is their greatest curse. Their national trait is kindness and now perhaps they’re being too kind. They should be non-violently dragging him out of the office. They should be going to him – like they did with Nixon – and saying, ‘You’re not fit for the fucking office, get out. Pretend you’ve had a heart-attack, a series of mini-strokes, whatever you want, but get the fuck out!’
When a reporter confronted Trump about his massive unpopularity in Ireland, he responded with a familiar refrain.
Reporter: They say your approval rating is really low in Ireland, around 20 percent, but by the way those fans scream, you think those polls are incorrect?
Trump: I think the polls are fake. My approval rating in Ireland is good. My approval rating in the US is great. The problem is, only the legitimate pollsters show it, as you understand.
Double Troubles: During the trip, Trump threw a gaffe grenade when he bumbled his way through a question about reunification.
I’d love to see it unified. I have friends on both sides. Great people. They’re Irish people. How can they be bad, right? I’d love to see it unified. I think it’d be a great, uh, a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. It’s gonna happen eventually.
You know what, the way I look at it, it’s gonna happen eventually. This will happen now. We’re talking about it and you got the right man over here to get it moving. But, uh, yeah, I’d like, I think it would be a fantastic thing. Now, the UK will have something to say about it, obviously, but I think it would be a great thing.
I mean, how can it be bad?
Windbag: The gaffe followed him around Ireland, including in this bizarre moment when a reporter pressed him about it, and Trump changed the subject.
Q: What do you make of what the British PM said about your comments on a united Ireland?
TRUMP: I don't know what he said
Q: He said there will be no referendum until the majority of people in Northern Ireland--
TRUMP: Everybody says that, and then things happen. One thing he's going to do is he's going to be stopping the stupid windmills…
I’m sorry but literally tilting at windmills is not helping you beat the dementia charges, Don.
