Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Thursday morning after Trump dropped a stunning new threat against press freedom and basic human rights — and that was just the beginning.
They Shoot Leakers Don’t They: Leading off, Trump has been touring the country with a barnstorming political violence roadshow that got ugly again on Wednesday when he told the crowd in Arizona that quote “leakers should be shot.”
Leakers should be, in my opinion, leakers should be shot.
In the old days, we used to shoot leakers, you know, when, when they leak, what time you’re going to attack a country.
Moments later, he expanded the definition of a leaker to include the press, whose ability to publish leaks is constitutionally protected.
You know, every time I go to a news conference, they look at me, they’re the same people up there. They’re very, they’re almost as bad as a leaker because they leak. No, they leak false information that makes them a leaker.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Trump appeared to be inventing a leak that never happened.
They ought to go to jail and be shot for the rest of their life.
They should be in jail. But they leaked that we were leaving at 1207 from Missouri and it was in the New York Times, CNN. They leaked the time we were leaving, the time we were arriving and I called General Razin’ Caine. I said, General, that’s that good, is it? He said, not good, sir, but we can do it anyway. I said, let’s change the time. So I called off the raid.
Remember SignalGate: But you know who did do something like that? Pete Hegseth. Here’s a refresher.
I wonder where this fits in with Hegseth’s firing squad fantasies.
Trump’s rant represents a threat to one of the foundational principles of accountability journalism and yet another descent into barbarism that isn’t just un-American and unconstitutional, it’s inhuman.
Donnie’s Choice: But that wasn’t the only outrageous thing Trump said yesterday. In brief remarks to reporters after his second rally, in Montana of all places, Trump blurted out that he can end the Iran war whenever he wants to. Seriously!
And the Iran war will end very soon. It’s going to end very soon. As soon as I want it to end, it’ll end.
Excuse me? 21 Americans are dead and at least 835 have been wounded, Americans have spent billions on the war and over a hundred million extra on fuel, and you can stop it quote “as soon as I want?”
That rant alone should end his presidency.
Murder Rap: Back to that Arizona rally, Trump showed off what a thirsty weirdo he is by stopping his rally so he could hunt for a woman he’d seen being interviewed because she loved him so much, he could “murder somebody” and she’d be okay with it.
I mean WHAT? Natalie, you gotta stop showing him that stuff, you’ll give him ideas.
