Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Monday morning after a crazy weekend of Trump lashing out at the press and being nuts at rallies — and getting triggered by a better president. I know that doesn’t narrow it down at all.
Dying On Fugitive Accused Rapist Hill: Trump continued to lead the Republican effort to die on the hill of defending the despicable ad attacking Amy Acton, and siding with the woman who fled her own children with the man who was indicted for raping her then-12-year-old daughter.
In a stunning exchange, Trump lashed out at NBC News correspondent Monica Alba when she confronted him over the rape charges during a press gaggle on Friday.
It began with Alba giving Trump a shot, asking if he’d changed his mind about the ad after learning the backstory.
When Alba followed up with a poignant follow-up, Trump went berserk on her.
MONICA ALBA (NBC News): Do the sexual abuse allegations make no difference? [crosstalk]
PRESIDENT TRUMP: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Slow down. Who you with? Who you with?
MONICA ALBA (NBC News): I’m with NBC, sir.
PRESIDENT TRUMP: One of the worst networks you have.
MONICA ALBA (NBC News): But they’re very serious sexual abuse allegations.
PRESIDENT TRUMP: Quiet.
MONICA ALBA (NBC News): They make no difference to you?
PRESIDENT TRUMP: You’re a fresh person. You’re a horrible little reporter, aren’t you?
Alba hangs in there and drills down when Trump tries to dismiss the allegations, an example that all reporters should follow when he spews lies and smears.
Smear Factor: Speaking of which, during the same gaggle, Trump amped up his racist lies about Abdul El-Sayed by calling him a “violent jihadist.”
MAAP Check: Trump and his supporters are panicking over El-Sayed because he’s leading Mike Rogers by 2.5 points in the average, a huge blow to their hopes of keeping control of the Senate.
