Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Monday morning after Canada told Donald Trump to “take off you hoser”, and Trump presided over a dangerous IndyCar race that put Melania Trump and Natalie Harp in the same frame. Start your engines!
O Shit, Canada!: On Saturday, Canada abruptly ended trade talks with the U.S. and announced it will match tariffs “dollar for dollar.”
Among the weird reasons for the breakdown was what Carney described at a press conference as “threats” on French Canadian language and culture.
This was not our choice. We were ready and close to having a comprehensive agreement that would be fair to both countries. But they made changes, including threats on the French language and Quebec culture and Canadian culture. That is not acceptable. That would never be acceptable.
Trump Gets Hosed By Canadian Reporter: While Carney’s press conference was replete with tough but clear defiance from the PM, it was the questioning by Greg Quinn of Market News that summed things up perfectly for us.
GREG QUINN: What do you say to other business and government leaders around the world who can wonder if the US can be trusted from here?
If Donald Trump can’t execute the art of the deal with friendly Canada, who can he do business with?
GREG QUINN: Was part of your calculation around declining US bargaining power—I’m thinking of President Trump’s polling numbers versus yours. I’m thinking of already elevated inflation…
Ouch, Canada!
Still Better Than Getting Hugged By Trump: After getting clobbered by Canada, Trump took his frustrations out on the starting flag at the so-called “Freedom 250 Grand Prix” event. In a clip that went insanely viral, Trump appears to be trying to shake the green out of that thing as Melania Trump and Natalie Harp look on.
It’s arguably not the worst abuse he’s inflicted on a flag.
Chaser: In another viral clip, Trump had to be told which end of the flag to hold.
